This was my chance in 1979 to see the band live andthis show impressed me in two aspects: it was a hell of a, no second wasted, pure energy. I was in heaven then. I remember Snowy White on stage but i'm not sure, if there also was Gary Moore too aside of Phil Lynott.
2nd aspect: we left the venue (as far as i remember, it was werner goldi balzert who took me with him that day) quietly, no words to express what we just saw - and went to a pizzeria.
Goldi was the guy who organized for Unikult Saarbrücken very great shows those days and often engaged me to work there as a roadie for ie. Ultravox!, Eddie & The Hot Rods, Dr. Feelgood, Steve Hillage, Steel Pulse to name a few, when they were young & hot. Some "archivalia" on him and Unikult to be found here
There at the pizzeria the guy who came to our table with the menu card opened his mouth and made some funny movements but stayed silent - i thought "Is he joking me??". But than i realized, i was completely deaf (don't panic, just for some times). Never made that experience before or after. Seems they were the loudestband i ever heard (well, i missed Grand Funk Railroad ... in their better days when one of their shows was noted as "earthquake")
My first encounter with Kevin Coyne (being a fan of this beautiful loser for years) took place at this festival across the (hard then) french border: Rettel 1980
On stage with him that day The Clash, "London Calling" was just released, UFO (i would like to have seen them 10 years earlier) and The Cure (presenting "17 Seconds") ... sounds like one has to be overwelmed by the big C's. But, this fat social worker in pink dungarees blew them straight away.
I don't know the members of his band, sometimes i argue it could've been The Ruts (he had just made a 2LP "Sanity Stomp", one record with Brian Godding and Robert Wyatt and one with The Ruts as band). I dunno, but what I remember was the pure energy just blowing me away (maybe a bit of Mescal was also involved in the experience, too).
What a beautiful loser! There's a story out there on the Doors asking him to be their singer after jims dead and him just answering "no" to that offer - great work over 3 decades and always heart-touching. When later stranded lost in germany he found his second wife and stayed at nurenberg to his death some decade later.
[fun fact: also the great moondog found a home in germany, where he stayed living with a family who picked him up for some christmas meal, on an invitation proposed by the daughter as xMas wish ...]
This Rockpalast-Record also shows the legendary Zoot Money playing keybords for kevin. Enjoy!
PS: There's a Youtube Audio out there of the Clash set.
Wire’s RockPalast appearance, dated Valentine’s day 1979, finds the band
with a confidence born of a knowledge that their place in rock history
is assured yet still possessing a freshness and willingness to push
ahead as evinced by the fact that at least half the material is from the
yet to be recorded 154. With the 20/20 hindsight the quality of this
performance is such that it is able to simultaneously explode various
Wire myths and perhaps create some new ones..
