Hey is it me, or where did everybody go? I'm talking about my fellow brothers here. I realize everyone has a million other things they could be doing, instead of posting music for you to enjoy with little or no thanks at all. Maybe it's just a lull but why am I bored right out of my skull (name that lyric).

Gary Barrett (alfienoakes on Dime) RIP
Gary was a well-known figure in the Glasgow music scene, after working in A1 Sounds / Fopp and Avalanche Records for over 20 years. He also promoted a few shows in the mid 80s. When minidisc technology emerged, he immediately set himself up for recording and began chronicling all the gigs he attended. This is a record of all the existing MD’s I found in his massive music collection, which his brother asked me to transfer on to hard drive. Gary passed away suddenly from natural causes in Sept 2006, ironically just after he purchased his first HD recorder and only got to record 2 shows with (Green On Red at King Tut’s being the last one). Big thanks to jamroom for taking over this project and the many dimebots who have helped him in this massive endeavour. This MD Project is a tribute to Gary's passion for live music and supporting local and small touring bands.
Band members: Tom Verlaine – Vocals, Guitar Billy Ficca – Drums Fred Smith – Bass, Vocals Richard Lloyd – Guitar, Vocals
Gig Notes:
Gary never taped any support acts, if there were any. Recording notes and sound quality:
Added fades and boosted the volume by +4db. There's some chat to be heard (why?) and an enthusiastic clapper / singer near Gary for a while, but it's still a great listen.
Many thanks to jokingman for completing the setlist.
Do NOT sell these recordings, trade FREELY! No art, make you own. Enjoy!

Moby Grape - Fall On Amsterdam
February 12, 1969 Rai Congrescentrum Soundboard @320
Originally pulled from Chris Goes Rock
All notes and credit belong to to him.
The group was formed in late 1966 in San Francisco. (Although the origin of the name seems to be undetermined, it is likely from the punch line of the joke "What's big and purple and lives in the ocean?") Frontman and rhythm guitarist Skip Spence (the original drummer for Jefferson Airplane), lead guitarist Jerry Miller and drummer Don Stevenson (both formerly of the Frantics), rhythm guitarist (and son of actress Loretta Young) Peter Lewis (of the Cornells), and bassist Bob Mosley all wrote songs for their debut album Moby Grape (1967). In a marketing stunt Columbia Records immediately released five singles at once, and the band was perceived as being over-hyped. This was during a period in which mainstream record labels were giving unheard of levels of promotion to what was then considered counter-cultural music genres. Nonetheless, the record was critically acclaimed, and fairly successful commercially, with The Move covering its sardonic ode to hippiedom, "Hey Grandma". Spence's "Omaha" reached the lower rungs of the American singles charts in 1967, and Miller-Stevenson's "8:05" became a country rock standard (covered by The Grateful Dead, Robert Plant, Guy Burlage, and others). Moby Grape has today achieved the status of a highly respected rock album.[1] In addition to the marketing backlash, band members found themselves in legal trouble for charges (later dropped) of consorting with underage females, and the band's relationship with their manager rapidly deteriorated. The second album, Wow, was a critical and commercial failure, partially due to the double-album format (and price). The 2nd LP was one of loose and mostly directionless jams, and this detracted from the stronger tunes on the 1st LP such as the room-shaking shuffle "Can't Be So Bad". Their basic sound remained consistent from the first album, featuring tight harmonies, multiple guitars, imaginative songwriting and a generally stronger level of musicianship than what was found coming out of the Bay Area at the time with the exception of the seminal Steve Miller Band. During its recording, Spence, who was supposedly never the same after ingesting large quantities of LSD (see also the biographies of Peter Green and Syd Barrett), started to go through the hotel room door of Stevenson and Miller using a fire axe, intending to murder them; In the words of Miller: "Skippy changed radically when we were in New York. There were some people there that were into harder drugs and a harder lifestyle, and some very weird shit. And so he kind of flew off with those people. They were really strange, almost Nazi-ish. Skippy kind of disappeared for a little while. Next time we saw him he had cut off his beard, and he had a black leather jacket on, with his chest hanging out, with some chains and just sweating like a son of a gun. I don't know what the hell he got a hold of, man, but it just whacked him. And the next thing I know, he axed my door down in the Albert Hotel. They said at the reception area that this crazy guy had held an axe to the doorman's head." Spence was committed to New York's Bellevue Hospital; on the day of his release he drove a motorcycle dressed in only his pajamas directly to Nashville to record his only solo album, Oar. The original lineup released an album in 1971, 20 Granite Creek. The remainder soldiered on for a few years, but save for a reunion or two, essentially joining Jerry Miller's band in Santa Cruz, the group never returned to the level of excellence and popularity they enjoyed in the early Avalon Ballroom/Fillmore Auditorium days. Moby Grape was an example of a talented band who, through a combination of mismanagement and inexperience, never fully realized their potential. Along with the Flamin' Groovies, they were somewhat of an anomaly in the San Francisco rock scene; their concision and their strong roots in country music and early rock and roll seemed to work against them. In addition, perhaps because they were so versatile, their image was somewhat nebulous; as writer Robert Christgau put it, "All they really lacked was a boss, and what could be more American than that?" Jerry Miller carries on today (2007) as the Jerry Miller Band, playing rockin' blues and the occasional Grape song. Homeless for years and suffering from long-term mental illness and a multitude of health ailments, the mercurial and brilliant Skip Spence died in Santa Cruz, CA in 1999. In 2006, after three decades of court battles, the band finally won back their name from the much-hated (in the music industry) former manager Matthew Katz and in celebration announced a reunion show with all of its living members, bolstered by drummer Ainsley Dunbar (Mayall, Zappa, Journey) and keyboardist Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship), to be performed in January 2007 at San Francisco's The Fillmore. However, the reunion show did not take place and nothing has been announced about future plans. The 1993 Vintage: The Very Best of Moby Grape includes their first album in its entirety, as well as selected tracks from 1967 to 1969. The debut is the only one of the original Columbia LPs to have a complete CD reissue with all of the original tracks. The San Francisco Sound label has released a CD version of "Wow", but it is a one-disc treatment that has a few tracks edited down and others deleted from the original album. "Moby Grape '69" has all of its songs represented on the "Vintage" anthology, but two of these are alternate versions not present in the original. ~CGR

Ginger Baker/No Material
Live Munich 1987
Theaterfabrik, Unterföhring, Munich, Germany March 25, 1987 Soundboard @320
Out of Print
No Material consisted of Ginger Baker (drums), Nicky Skopelitis and Sonny Sharrock (guitars), Peter Brötzmann (sax), and Jan Kazda (bass). The band existed for less than a week in 1987. In the liner notes for the 1989 release of Ginger Baker's No Material album, Steve Lake closes by saying "I'm glad that No Material came together to nail down their non-repertoire in March 1987 and glad that their efforts are now preserved for posterity to puzzle over. May the archivists now go and look for the Munich gig." Well, 20-plus years later, here is the Munich gig: the first show ever performed by this semi-legendary band. As expected, the performance is absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, the recording is not. The biggest issue is the sound. While it's generally clear, the sound is thin and the high end (especially any cymbal work) sounds terrible. It sounds as if the CD was mastered from a compressed MP3 file. Then there's the way it's programmed. The brief interview excerpts follow the first two tracks, totally derailing the momentum of the show. The Sharrock bit is nice, if a bit out of place, but the Skopelitis excerpt adds absolutely nothing. Time must have been a factor because "Piece 3" fades out and back in somewhat clumsily. "Piece 5" is basically solo Sharrock, riffing on his own "Blind Willie" before fading out just shy of the two-minute mark. It's a confusing way to end the album since there was clearly more music. Fans will want to hear this for sure, but they're likely to be somewhat disappointed. ~Sean Westergaard - Allmusic.com

Gene Clark’s 20th Anniversary
Tribute To The Byrds
Memorial Auditorium
Burlington, Vermont
January 15, 1985
Soundboard @320
Gene Clark will always be best remembered for his two-year stint as a vocalist with the Byrds between 1964 and 1966. A fine legacy to be sure, but the shame of it is that there was far more to Clark's body of work than that; he was a superb songwriter, one of the founding fathers of country-rock, and recorded a number of fine albums with an impressive array of collaborators whose quality far outstripped their modest sales figures. Gene Clark and The Byrds set aside their differences long enough to appear together at their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in January of 1991, where the original lineup played a few songs together, including Clark's "Feel a Whole Lot Better." However, Clark's health continued to decline as his drinking accelerated, and on May 24, 1991, not long after he had begun work on a second album with Carla Olson, Gene Clark died, with the coroner declaring he succumbed as a result of "natural causes" brought on by a bleeding ulcer. ~AM

Captain Beefheart
Brown Star Sessions 1972
Studio Session Outtakes @ 320
Info: The 1972 sessions that produced the Spotlight Kid and Clear
Spot LPs marked a new era in the recording career of Captain Beefheart
and The Magic Band. With the Captain appearing to have loosened the
structural death grip he imposed on his musicians since the Trout Mask
Replica LP, the tracks that make up the Brown Star Sessions illustrate
the band exploring some new turf by stretching out the tunes and taking
their polyrhythmic mayhem to new heights. The results are similar in
feel to the officially released Mirror Man Sessions, but more relaxed
and varied in style and instrumentation. A number of the tracks here are
either instrumental or wildly different versions than those that would
appear on Spotlight Kid, Clear Spot and subsequent LPs. Check out the
rubbery "Boogler Risin'", which later became "I'm Gonna Booglarize You
Baby" and the slower than molasses take on "Clear Spot." The fidelity
here is better in some points than others (some sound like studio
masters, others contain a little tape hiss) but this is easy to overlook
when the music is as potent as this stuff. Enjoy a good freak out.

~Recorded and mixed in Audacity by scdegraaf~ Because the guitars were very low in the soundboard mix and were mainly taken from the amps on stage I used more audience in my mix than I usually do. Moreover I liked the audience recording better than the soundboard recording. However mixed together they make a very nice recording.
