The Cars - Live @ El Macambo - Toronto Sept. 14, 1978

For me, The Cars started out as a great rock band. Catchy songs that were too Rock to be strictly New-Wave, and with just enough Punk spirit to be strictly Rock. They put the synth to great use, weaving it perfectly into the band's sound instead of following the then dubious trend of nerve-grating keyboard wankery.
Then, somewhere along MTV's insidious and dastardly take-over of music, The Cars lost the plot and I lost interest. However, this set represents the band giving a full-on Rock show. You can feel in the music that the band is definitely digging it and playing as a great live band should, warts-and-all. Most of the cuts here are from their self-titled debut, including They Won't See You, which didn't make the final cut for The Cars.  Also features early versions of Nightspots, Since I Held You, and Candy-O which would later appear on their 2nd album.

This comes from an FM Source and is brought to in Mp3 @ 320.

Enjoy! Or not.

Tom Waits - Live @ McCabe's Guitar Shop - Santa Monica, CA Jan. 31, 1975

If you're a fan of Waits' early bohemian-hipster-gutter-poet phase, this is a wonderful showcase. His stage banter is delivered with a sly wink, and doesn't sound too laid-back or too forced. The thing I love about the recording presented here is that even though it is a SBD, it sounds a bit like an old 78 record. Which gives the whole Tom Waits' musical thing the perfect ambiance. So sit back, pour a drink, light a smoke, and dig these tunes.   Brought to you in Mp3 @ 320.

Nick Gravenites - 1969 (with Michael Bloomfield) - My Labors

Nick Gravenites - 1969 (with Michael Bloomfield) - My Labors
(TomP) Remaster

Mike Bloomfield and Friends at the Fillmore
February 1, 1969 (Opening act for Chuck Berry)

TYpe: Bootleg
Format: Flac files
Quality: A+
Lineage: Source: Dime post by 'steeve_a' - thanks for this and the encouragement to remaster
http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=136943

Changes Made (Nero 7):
Cross-mixed all tracks (65:35 except for tr01 63:37)
- much improved stereo image and instrument clarity
Fixed volume fluctuations in all tracks
Fixed quiet beginnings of several tracks
Small changes in all tracks to centre stereo image
Applied +3dB treble lift on all tracks except tr01 (just +1dB)
Applied -1dB bass cut on tr03 & 04 to reduce excessive bass
Applied Nero noise print NR on all tracks except tr01

Quality: Must be an A++ now
------------------------------

The original was a great sounding recording, but with a strange stereo mix typical of
the late 60's with instruments extreme left and right and not much in the middle. Also
the bass was very fat and 'phasey'.

I had some discussions with OP 'steeve_a' on his great Butterfield Unicorn post, where
cross-mixing greatly improved the sound. Look for him to post a remaster of that one
whilst I offered to similarly remaster this one (see full details above).

Now you have a quite superb sounding recording, even more amazing for the vintage, and
of course the great irreplaceable Bloomfield and Gravenites, so....

Hope you like this too - Enjoy !!

Set List (54.43)
-------------------
01 - Born In Chicago (9.33)
02 - Work Me Lord.flac (4.14)
03 - Killing My Love (4.56)
04 - [Holy Moly] * OFFICIAL MATERIAL DELETED *
05 - My Heart Beat Like A Hammer (7.16)
06 - It's About Time (9.28)
07 - Young Girl (San Quentin Quail) (9.17)
08 - Born In Chicago (9.55)

Mike Bloomfield- guitar, vocals
Nick Gravenites- guitar, vocals
Mark Naftalin- piano
Ira Kamin- organ
John Kahn- bass
Cornelius "Snooky" Flowers- baritone sax
Gerald Oshita- baritone sax
John Wilmeth- trumpet
Noel Jewkes- tenor sax
Dino Andino- congas
Bob Jones- drums

Original Notes >>>

This was reportedly from Mark Naftalin's personal soundboard tapes.

Note: "Holy Moly" is the same performance on Nick Gravenites' "My Labors" album. "It's
About Time" is the same performance included on the February 8, 1969 soundboard (so one
of the two dates is obviously wrong). The two versions of "Born In Chicago" are quite
different, and make a great way to start and end the recording.

Lineage:

CDR received from trader -> EAC secure rip to FLAC files

FLAC files edited extensively with Cool Edit Pro 2 (aka CEP):
- pops and clicks removed manually
- noise at beginning and end of tracks was attenuated
- tape dropouts and flutters repaired as feasible
- annoying "squeaks" removed manually as heard throughout the tracks (I believe that
these squeaks were the microphone anti-feedback circuitry kicking in and I used a very
sharp single node filter to cut frequencies centered around mainly 5456Hz, but also
occasionally at frequencies of 6874, 6583 and 5739)

I also used the multi-track mode of CEP to check versions of "Killing My Love", "Holy
Moly" and "It's About Time". I had initially thought that "Holy Moly" was from a
different performance than the "My Labors" album, but in syncing up the two tracks
there was a slight difference in tape speed and processing, but they were otherwise
identical. So that track was removed from the torrent uploaded here at DIME.

For a very complete discography of Mike Bloomfield be sure to check out his official
site:

http://www.mikebloomfield.com/

By all means purchase the reissued version of Nick Gravenites' "My Labors & More" CD
released on the Acadia label in England in 2001 [ACA 8010]. In addition to the 5 live
tracks from the original vinyl album there are 3 live tracks from Mike Bloomfield's
"Live From Bill Graham's Fillmore West" album, which has never been reissued. One
additional live track from that album ("Carmelita Skiffle") is also available on the
Mike Bloomfield release on CBS Legacy "Don't Say That I Ain't Your Man - Essential
Blues 1964-1969" (which also includes "It Takes Time").

The The - Live Royal Albert Hall 1990

The The - Live Royal Albert Hall
London, UK
July 11 or 12th, 1990
Soundboard @320

The The was the guise of Matt Johnson, a mercurial singer/songwriter whose music ran the gamut from dance-pop to country. Born August 15, 1961, in London, Johnson was raised in the flat above his father's pub, the Two Puddings, a haven for well-known celebrities and criminals; he also became exposed to music at the nightclubs and dancehalls owned by his uncle, where he saw performers like Howlin' Wolf, the Kinks, and Muddy Waters. Johnson formed his first band, Roadstar, when he was 11; at the age of 15, he was hired as a tea boy for the DeWolfe music publishing company, and within three years, he was working in their recording studio as an assistant engineer.

After the demise of the duo the Marble Index in 1979, Johnson formed the first incarnation of The The with synth player Keith Laws; after playing their debut gig opening for Scritti Politti, the group issued its first single, "Controversial Subject," on the 4AD label in 1980. A year later, contractual obligations forced Johnson to issue the LP Burning Blue Soul under his own name; that year, he also recorded as a guitarist with the band the Gadgets, and The The contributed a track to the Some Bizzare Album compilation.

In 1982, The The -- now essentially a Johnson solo project, backed by a revolving coterie of musicians -- recorded the album The Pornography of Despair, which a dissatisfied Johnson chose not to release; a 1983 single recorded with Orange Juice's Zeke Manyika, "This Is the Day," formed the centerpiece of The The's proper debut, 1983's Soul Mining, an excursion into dance-flavored pop. Illness sidelined Johnson for much of the following year, and The The did not return until 1986's Infected, an eclectic commentary on the state of Britain in the modern world. Recorded with the aid of talents like Neneh Cherry, Art of Noise's Anne Dudley, and Swans' Roli Mosimann, Infected was also accompanied by an ambitious album-length video.

When The The returned with the dissonant Mind Bomb in 1989, they were once again a true band, with Johnson joined by ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr as well as bassist James Eller and former ABC drummer Dave Palmer. The same lineup remained for 1993's pared-down Dusk, but 1995's Hanky Panky marked yet another new direction when Johnson was joined by guitarist Eric Schermerhorn, keyboardist D.C. Collard, harmonica player Jim Fitting, and drummer Brian MacLeod. The first in a series of occasional albums celebrating the work of legendary performers, Hanky Panky was a brooding covers collection honoring the music of country great Hank Williams. NakedSelf followed in early 2000.
