The Smiths - Live Amsterdam & UK 1983-84

The Smiths - Live Amsterdam, & Europe 1984
aka -“The Butterfly Collector”
Soundboard Recording @192

Original Notes:
This recording consists of selections from the Amsterdam Vinyl party on April 21, 1984 (which were subsequently broadcast on Holland’s KRO Radio) and the entire Hacienda show on February 4, 1983. The sound quality is good, although some of the Amsterdam tracks seem to fall victim to that most infamous of CD bootleg atrocities - incorrect recording speed. In this case, “Girl Afraid,” “This Night Has Opened My Eyes,” “Still Ill,” “These Things Take Time,” and “Handsome Devil” all drag a bit. The concert itself is typically brilliant prime early Smiths, with Morrissey in fine spirits. The Hacienda recordings are of good quality and are quite fascinating because they feature The Smiths in front of a rather skeptical audience (between tracks it sounds like only a couple of people are clapping) at their first Hacienda appearance (and only their third live show ever). There are several endearing moments, such as when the young Morrissey confidently asserts, “The only thing to be in 1983 is handsome…” Other highlights include early versions of “The Hand That Rocks The Cradle,” “Jeane,” and “What Do You See In Him?”, the early blueprint for “Wonderful Woman”. Big Music once again prove themselves to be on the top of the bootleg heap with typically lovely packaging, including many fine blue-tinted photos of the band, a picture disk, and a completely accurate and typo-free track listing.

Vaultage 78 - Two Sides Of Brighton

A Dave Sez contribution for ChelseaGirl!...

Vaultage 78 - Two Sides Of Brighton

From the Dave Sez archive: as requested by ChelseaGirl!
One of the best early UK regional compilations. Vaultage 78 showcases the lighter, reggae-tinged powerpop produced in Brighton on Britain's south coast, contrasting with the harder, gloomier punk emerging from up North. The LP includes no less than four classics (marked *) - I mean, how can you resist lyrics like "In August 1977, Elvis met his fate. He could not get into heaven, he couldn't fit through the gate" or "I don't want my body, it looks like a reject from an Oxfam poster. Sex is its hobby, I stick in the slot like bread in a toaster"?

Attrix Records, vinyl compilation released 1978 ripped @ 192. Attrix went on to produce two more Brighton compilations in 1979 and 1980; the excellent website punkbrighton.co.uk offers free downloads of all three compilations and many extra tracks by the various groups featured - links in the download text.

Full artwork and text included, and as a bonus, I enclose some of the extra tracks from the website by the Dodgems, Piranhas, Parrots and Nicky & The Dots. Unfortunately, nothing more would be heard from Devil's Dykes, my personal favourites. The Piranhas would record an album, a string of singles and three Peel sessions; Peter And The Test Tube Babies would go on to become famous on the punk underground scene.

Track List:
A1    Nicky & The Dots – Girl Gets Nervous
A2    Nicky & The Dots – I Find That Really Surprises Me
A3    Nicky & The Dots – Wrong Street
A4    Dodgems, The – I Don't Care
A5    Devil's Dykes –    Fruitless
A6    Devil's Dykes –    Plastic Flowers    *
A7    Peter And The Test Tube Babies – Elvis Is Dead    *
B1    Parrots, The  –    Larger Than Life
B2    Parrots, The  –    Vicious Circle
B3    Vitamins, The –    New Town
B4    Dodgems, The – Lord Lucan Is Missing *
B5    Piranhas, The – Tension
B6    Piranhas, The – Virginity
B7    Piranhas, The –    I Don't Want My Body *

Gil Scott-Heron - Small Talk at 125th and Lenox {Out of Print}

Gil Scott-Heron - Small Talk at 125th and Lenox
Live Soundboard Recording- 1970 @192
Out of Print
available at Amazon - from $118.50

Gil Scott-Heron's first album -- and his angriest. Unlike some of Gil's other albums -- which have a sweet jazzy vibe and a mix of mellow soul styles -- this one's a lot rawer, and features Gil rapping loud over very heavy percussion backing. All the work is his own, and the album's a showcase for his brilliant protest poetry -- the most famous example of which is included in "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", which leads off the album with an especially righteous groove! The set's a key link in the African American musical tradition of the 20th century -- and proof that the underground, while not always afforded a good place in the broadcast markets of the US, could always burst forth in the "narrowcast" medium of recorded music. A landmark album -- one we like even better than the early work by the Last Poets -- and great all the way through! Tracks include "Whitey On The Moon", "Who'll Pay Reparations On My Soul?", "The Subject Was Faggots", and "Brother".

Gil Scott-Heron - Piano, Vocals, Poetry
Eddie Knowles - Conga
Charlie Saunders - Conga
David Barnes - Percussion, Vocals

Two demos only released on out-of-print 1993 RPM CD 16-track release of "Sense and Sensuality", see http://www.discogs.com/Au-Pairs-Sense-Sensuality/release/391473. They were excluded from Castle's 2002 10-track CD re-release, which corrected earlier speed problems.

The four remaining 1983 demos are included on the 2006 Au Pairs anthology, available in FLAC/320 at http://onlythelonelymusic.blogspot.com/2013/11/au-pairs-stepping-out-of-line-anthology.html. These two tracks would only otherwise be recorded at the Au Pairs' last gig, probably in February 1983 in Vienna, available here: http://433rpm.blogspot.com/2010/09/au-pairs-live-1983-tape-1983.html.

Penetration - Race Against Time 77-79 {Out of Print}

A Dave Sez contribution....

Penetration - Race Against Time
Official Bootleg and Peel sessions
Out of Print
Studio & FM Source Recordings @320

From the Dave Sez archive:
Although Siouxsie and the Banshees and X-Ray Spex gained greater coverage as women-led punk bands, for me Penetration from Newcastle in Northern England were the better band: their track "Never Never" is right up there with the Pistols' "I Wanna Be Me" as a classic punk anthem, and only Pauline Murray could convincingly cover Patti Smith's "Free Money". Launched by their first single "Don't Dictate" in November 1977, the band would split in October 1979, soon after which they released the ultra-rare "Race Against Time" official vinyl bootleg of demos and live tracks. In 1995, this was re-released on CD with their 1978 and 1979 Peel sessions, a CD now long out of print. If you like classic UK punk, you should not miss this.

Line-up:
Pauline Murray (vocals)
Gary Chaplin (guitar, 1977-78)
Fred Purser (guitar, backing vocals, 1978-79)
Neil Floyd (guitar, 1978-79)
Robert Blamire (bass)
Gary Smallman (drums)

Track List:
Demo side of Race Against Time, 1977-Jan 78:

02 Firing Squad
03 Race Against Time
04 In The Future

12 Vision
13 Future Daze

Peel Session 28/02/1979:
