John McLaughlin & Billy Cobham - Live Montreaux 2010

John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham
Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland
July 2, 2010.

BBC FM Source @224

Radio presenter Jaz Nelson:

The Mahavishnu Orchestra performed in 1971, unleashed a series of cosmic… fusion albums until ‘76 when their inner mounting flame grew too hot and they imploded. They got together briefly in 1984 and then disappeared again until at last one day last July when guitarist John McLaughlin just happened to be hanging out on the banks of Lake Geneva when he got a call from his old friend Claude Nobs telling him that a band had cancelled that night and Claude said, ‘John, do you fancy getting back together with Billy Cobham and playing some Mahavishnu tunes?’

Thanks to Tom Phillips who shared the tracks on Dime. Tom noted: “John McLaughlin’s last minute ad-hoc reunion with Billy Cobham, recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival last July. Suberbly recorded and demonstrating the John hasn’t lost his chops (where has he been for the last 25 years?), it is only short highlights…”

Certainly shows why the Mahavishnu Orchestra should never be overlooked.
Thanks also to fastone for the artwork.

Radical Face - The Bastards EP's

Nightclothes by Radical Face

Singer-Songwriter Radical Face's The Family Tree trilogy is the story of a fictitious, and sometimes otherworldly, 19th century family. The story is told by using melodies and instrumentation to represent "family members", and only using instruments that would have been available during that era of the story.
In advance of the release of the final album in The Family Tree trilogy next year, Radical Face stays with tradition by releasing The Bastards that didn't make the album but are more than worthy of being shared. The Bastards 3 EP is the next installment in this series and will be a welcome relief to fans everywhere looking for new Radical Face music.

The third Bastards EP is now up on Spotify. These EPs are just the songs that didn't fit on the proper records, but they are still a part of the whole Family Tree project. And the songs aren't throwaways. I'm actually quite happy with them. They just didn't fit the album in terms of pace, or tone.

Sugar Blue - Live Chicago Blues Fest 1985

Sugar Blue - Live Chicago Blues Festival
Grant Park, Chicago, IL.

marantz deck>master tape(tdk ad90)>technics rs-t36r>r9(line in 24/48)>2gb memory card>pc>audition>cd wav
>tlh(flac 8)>MP3>you

The two sides of the cassette were joined using audtion. The tracks were converted and cut using cd wave. The source is thrilled to share his fm master tape and sees the Blues as being of of America's Greatest Treasures. Here comes a sizzing performance from Grammy Winner Sugar Blue. Having played with countless heavies of many genres, he's possibly most well known for his riffing on the Rolling Stones's hit "Miss You."

Chicago loves Sugar, and gives him a warn welome and a night to forever remember as at the end of the show he receives his Grammy for playing on "Blues Explosion."

The tape was is great shape and there was no issue with the transfer. There is some hiss, but it is nothing. Track 9 cuts in. Dont know how much is missing. Overall, it has a great mix and sounds awesome. 8-9/10.

Hoodoo Gurus - Live Lyon, France 1989

Hoodoo Gurus - Live
Lyon, France 1989
Soundboard or FM Source @320

The legendary Hoodoo Gurus. By any measure, one of Australia's greatest, best loved, most enduring rock bands of all time.
2012 marks an extraordinary milestone for the Hoodoo Gurus; 30 years since the release of the band's debut single, "Leilani".

To celebrate, the Gurus have compiled all their biggest hits and fan favourites onto a brand new best-of set, aptly-titled GOLD WATCH: 20 GOLDEN GREATS.
"What's My Scene?", "I Want You Back", "Miss Freelove '69", "Like Wow - Wipeout!", "The Right Time", "Bittersweet", "Come Anytime", "My Girl", "1000 Miles Away", "Waking Up Tired" - these tracks represent the unmistakable sound of the irrepressible Hoodoo Gurus, but it's merely a sample from their canon of instantly identifiable songs that have helped provide a soundtrack to Australian life going all the way back to the 1980s.

A 6 Pack of freebies...

Therapy? - Nurse {1993}

Therapy? - Nurse (1993)
Studio Recordings @320
{Out Of Print}

The beauty of Nurse is its uncompromising ability to play at the outer limits of post punk, post grunge music and be totally convincing about it. One of the determining qualities of a great soul/gospel singer is whether or not they truly believe in what they are singing about; phoneys just don't carry the day which is why James Brown, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and Mavis Staples had the power to effect the listener in the most profound way - they all had total emotional commitment to match their musical talents. Nurse achieves that same over powering delivery.

The music coming from this trio is massive, with big sounding chords perfectly chosen to carry such a heavy sound, yet paradoxically some of the riffs may have their origin in something as innocuous as an Irish jig. Tension continues to be cranked up by a super charged grunge gone into over drive that suddenly plunges into release by duo interplays of bass and drums while sustained razor edge guitar tones hover and recede. This is a sound that blows Joy Division clean out of the water and reminded me at certain moments of early Pere Ubu. It makes Oasis sound silly and transcends Nirvana to the outer grunge limits. I'm convinced until told otherwise that the opening bars to the track 'Gone' are a doffing of the hat to the Velvet Underground's Heroin, while bringing the cello in on that same track is surely the masters touch.

Finally, due to the spacious sense of the recording, you need to have the volume up for the full sonic delivery. Unlike another reviewer who found the sound thin, I haven't been left with that impression at all, just have the volume well up and you actually get the full dividends of a cautious engineering decision - plenty of bloom and resonance with no strain or distortion. The bass is full and fabulous, the drumming tight in tuning and execution and the lead vocalist/guitarist carries the day with conviction. I also have the sneaking suspicion that Therapy's Nurse has influenced a lot of wannabees who just can't cut it, turning out limp watered down attempts that pale to insignificance next to this blistering original. Hear for yourselves.

"Old Codger"
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am

Communion's got a lot of grace
It's got style and bread and wine
But they're not mine!
You know what I like!

What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am

I may be long in tooth and jaw
But I've got a lot of nerve
When it comes to an angel boy
Pray for me!

What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am
What an old codger I am

When the choir is singing in the aisles
And the moon tomes up over the steeple
I might just turn into a bol-weevil
And creep up on you with my beef-jerky!

Hey baby!
We're gonna shave 'em dry
You know what shave 'em dry is?
You'll learn!
Mmmm, that's good, that's good!
That's very good!
Just close your eyes baby and think of England!
Well why not?
I always keep my socks on!
