Ginger Baker/No Material - Munich 1987

Rebooted...Again
Originally posted June 14, 2016 & August 6, 2022

Ginger Baker/No Material
Live Munich 1987
Theaterfabrik, Unterföhring,
Munich, Germany

March 25, 1987
Soundboard @320
Out of Print

No Material consisted of Ginger Baker (drums), Nicky Skopelitis and Sonny Sharrock (guitars), Peter Brötzmann (sax), and Jan Kazda (bass). The band existed for less than a week in 1987. In the liner notes for the 1989 release of Ginger Baker's No Material album, Steve Lake closes by saying "I'm glad that No Material came together to nail down their non-repertoire in March 1987 and glad that their efforts are now preserved for posterity to puzzle over. May the archivists now go and look for the Munich gig." Well, 20-plus years later, here is the Munich gig: the first show ever performed by this semi-legendary band. As expected, the performance is absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, the recording is not. The biggest issue is the sound. While it's generally clear, the sound is thin and the high end (especially any cymbal work) sounds terrible. It sounds as if the CD was mastered from a compressed MP3 file. Then there's the way it's programmed. The brief interview excerpts follow the first two tracks, totally derailing the momentum of the show. The Sharrock bit is nice, if a bit out of place, but the Skopelitis excerpt adds absolutely nothing. Time must have been a factor because "Piece 3" fades out and back in somewhat clumsily. "Piece 5" is basically solo Sharrock, riffing on his own "Blind Willie" before fading out just shy of the two-minute mark. It's a confusing way to end the album since there was clearly more music. Fans will want to hear this for sure, but they're likely to be somewhat disappointed. ~Sean Westergaard - Allmusic.com

Not as bad as reviewed but definitely for those with a taste for the 'avante garde".

Track List:
Piece 1 (15:09)
Interview – Sonny Sharrock (0:31)
Piece 2 (10:05)
Interview – Nicky Skopelits (0:42)
Piece 3 (12:51)
Piece 4 (15:17)
Piece 5 (1:52)

Bass – Jan Kazda (tracks: 1, 3, 5 to 7)
Drums – Ginger Baker (tracks: 1, 3, 5 to 7)
Guitar – Nicky Skopelitis (tracks: 1, 3 to 7),

In Sept '89 I was able to make DAT copies of about 20 items from KSAN
reels. In the early '90s I did some DAT trades and since then they
appear to have circulated far and wide. I've seen these items pop up
here a number of times and the uploader had gotten them in trade and
did not know the original lineage. I thought I would get busy and
upload them myself since I put these in circulation to begin with and
I have the original DATs that they all come from.

Gene Clark - Tribute To The Byrds 1985

Rebooted by request...Again
Originally posted March 25, 2016

Gene Clark’s 20th Anniversary
Tribute To The Byrds
Memorial Auditorium
Burlington, Vermont
January 15, 1985
Soundboard @320

Gene Clark will always be best remembered for his two-year stint as a vocalist with the Byrds between 1964 and 1966. A fine legacy to be sure, but the shame of it is that there was far more to Clark's body of work than that; he was a superb songwriter, one of the founding fathers of country-rock, and recorded a number of fine albums with an impressive array of collaborators whose quality far outstripped their modest sales figures.
Gene Clark and The Byrds set aside their differences long enough to appear together at their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in January of 1991, where the original lineup played a few songs together, including Clark's "Feel a Whole Lot Better." However, Clark's health continued to decline as his drinking accelerated, and on May 24, 1991, not long after he had begun work on a second album with Carla Olson, Gene Clark died, with the coroner declaring he succumbed as a result of "natural causes" brought on by a bleeding ulcer.
