Wow !!! I just realized today would have been Elvis' 135 birthday. So in honor of that milestone I give you Rolling Stone's review of this stellar album as written by a Mr. Frank Chewewe.
*Dated March 6th 1965
Rarely, if ever does a record when finished, leave you gasping for air. But so is the case of this masterpiece. As Elvis has done so stupendously through out his career. This time he has taken middle eastern music and combined it with rock and roll. He first melded two geners of music together with New Orleans jazz and R&R in King Creole, then did it again with the melodies of the islands with Blue Hawaii. Elvis wearing a turban for his role as Johnny Tyrone must have stimulated his brain to conceive of something not tried by any of our other so-called "rock bands." Shake That Tambourine, if this one doesn't leave you gasping for air then you might want to check your pulse. So Close Yet So Far is as tender of a ballad as Elvis' song Loving You is. My Desert Serenade with it's use of the Pungi will remove the ear wax built up from listening to those abysmal Monkee records being shoved down our throats. Wisdom Of The Ages proves Elvis is a sage well beyond his time. Kismet with it's haunting melody is mesmerizing. Hey Little Girl what a rocker this is, ranking right up there with "Trouble," and "Hard Headed Woman," one more thing I might add, when James Williamson (of The Stooges) was asked to play guitar on this scorcher he was supposedly to have said "There is nothing I can add to to this greatness" Golden Coins how about golden lyrics? Animal Instinct is sure to make your girlfriend wet with sweat as she climbs all over you but fantasizing about E. Harem Holiday book my flight now. Go East Young Man and feast on all of the beautiful women Elvis seduces in this classic. Mirage IS IT? have I been truly hearing one of the greatest records of all time or is it a Mirage. *Due to space constraints I've had to cut the rest of this review. See scans
