Gang of Four - Live Melbourne, Australia 2011

photo by by CarbieWarbie
Gang of Four - Live Corner Hotel
Melbourne, Australia
March 2, 2011
(You be the judge) @ flac

audio: 2x DPA4061 > Sony PCM-M10
Silver CD - Wave -remaster w/ Equalizer APO - Flac
Re-Mastered by mcubel

The air conditioner in the band room of The Corner Hotel was shaking off its hinges. Next to a tower of speakers, it was fixed above the exit door, and it was rattling, almost dancing, like it wanted to jump off the wall. It was shaking because of the music, namely the song that was cutting through the speakers. The song was Anthrax, the band Gang of Four, and it was loud. Dangerously loud. Squalls of feedback rolled over the crowd, jagged sheets of distortion shaking the ground, the wall, the ceiling. You could feel it in your teeth. Meanwhile, the bass churned, the drums pounded. And over it all was the voice of Jon King intoning “Love will get you like a case of anthrax/and that’s something that I don’t want to catch”.

I don't think Dave Sez has this one...

Lee Morgan - Infinity (1965) {Out of Print}

Lee Morgan - Infinity (1965)
Studio Recordings @ abr 259
{Out of Print}

The late Lee Morgan had a lot of fine saxophonists (Mobley, Shorter, Joe Henderson) but none with as much empathy as altoist Jackie McLean. Starting with "Leeway" and then seguing into various dates in '65 either under Lee or Jackie's name--you would be guaranteed of grade A soloing. This date along with Jackie's "Consequence" which I rate as one of their best, shows the unified sound of these two great artists! In fact they're so together they sound like one. If you need a disc to start the day with--you can't go wrong with "Infinity"

Frank Zappa - Live Providence College 1975

Frank Zappa & The Mothers
with Captain Beefheart
Live Providence College
April 26, 1975
Providence, RI.
aka - The Muffin Man Goes To College
Very Good to excellent Audience Recording @320

OK folks, first and foremost the audio source for this double CD set is an audience recorded bootleg which I would generously rate as VG for bootleg quality. That would translate to 6 on a scale of 10. It has all the drawbacks of that medium-, not much sonic depth, negligible bass/bottom, lots of midrange and not much treble. Sounds like it was recorded directly in front of the PA speakers-it has that boxy quality. Also there is a definite splice around the 45 minute mark-occurs during a bass solo-which,I suppose,would make the original source some sort of cassette tho no hiss is apparent. Occasionally there's a bit of side conversation you pick up but it's not that intrusive. That's the downside. Here's the good stuff. It contains the full concert (@ 2hrs) on 2 CDs, the band is tight, the performances are excellent and Frank's guitar solos are stellar. The vocals are loud and clear and the instruments are defined quite well, from the trombone to the finger cymbals. There is an unreleased tune/skit called "Velvet Sunrise" and a very early version of "The Torture Never Stops"(done as a fast blues) which FZ introduces under it's original title, "Why doesn't somebody get him a Pepsi?"It is sung by Captain Beefheart. Speaking of the good Captain,he's a bit under represented during this show. He plays some atonal sax during the intro, some minor backing harmonica on two tracks, does great harp solos on "Penguin In Bondage" and "Advance Romance", recites his poem "Sam With The Showing Scalp Flat Top" and sings lead on the forementioned "Torture", "Poofter's Froth Wyoming Plans Ahead" and "Willie The Pimp".Frank introduces him "on sax and forgetfulness" and dubs him Captain Report Card for the evening.It was a college venue show.It's a great set with lots of spotlighting band members,giving them time to shine.Grab this while you can because it is a bootleg manufactured in Europe and probably ILLEGAL (due to copyright violations). I surmize this can only exist because the Zappa Family Trust hasn't gotten a "cease and desist" order against it yet.One can only hope that ZFT will issue an authorized version of a recording from this tour because there was so much more than was issued on the "Bongo Fury" LP. Sound quality = 6. Performance = 10.BTW if your amp has simulated "live" surround settings the audio on these CDs improves quite a bit. I use the "Club" setting and it really sounds much better.
~The Reverend

Pepe Deluxe - Beatitude 2003 {Out of Print}

Pepe Deluxe - Beatitude (2003)
Studio recordings @ VBR
{Out of Print}

The Finnish boys' sophomore effort is christened with samples about "cutting" and wicky-wicky, Blaxploitation-style guitars. Another downtempo hip-hop production to throw into the pile? Nope. Beatitude goes all over the map: surf guitar, wah-wah guitar, acoustic guitar, all coming together to make it, well, pretty guitar-heavy compared to their debut, Super Sound. Pepe Deluxe collaborates with nearly 40 other musicians here, flipping soul samples over a nice Bollywood-esqe creation, tinged with some acidy synth ("Girl"). Later they reach into commercial territory on "Ask for a Kiss," which sounds readymade for a Gap commercial. Styles pile alongside each other, and Beatitude kind of comes off as a hodgepodge. But despite the absence of a conceptual framework, the unfocused sprawl is part of the appeal. It's not Endtroducing or Deadringer, but some kind of martini-swilling, music-buff relative of those - one that wants to make you dance and then have sex with you. No problem then.

Tracks 18 & 25 * are two pretty long sections of enthusiastic crowd noise. I left them so you get the whole concert exactly as it has been recorded. For your listening pleasure, you may want to burn a CD without these two tracks.

Tracks 11 & 12 ** (fade-out & fade-in) were added to make a more pleasurable listening experience at the end of the first CD and at the start of the second one. When listening on a computer or any media that can accomodate more than 75 minutes of music, you can simply leave these two tracks out, so you get the whole concert in one go.

The LeRoi Brothers - Open All Night (1986) {Out of Print}

The LeRoi Brothers - Open All Night (1986)
 Studio Recordings @ 192
{Out of Print}

It goes without saying that no one in Austin, Texas' LeRoi Brothers is named LeRoi. Debuting on the unpretentious Check This Action as a trio (singer/guitarists Steve Doerr and Don Leady and drummer Mike Buck) plus a guest bassist, the LeRois set to rocking without ado, reeling off energetically unreconstructed rock'n'roll / R&B covers (plus a few originals that don't slow down the party one bit) in an unmistakable Southwestern accent. Evan Johns replaced guitarist Don Leady (who went on to form the Tail Gators), Lucky Lucky Me is a full menu of high-energy tunes played for keeps. "Fight Fire With Fire," the zydeco-tinged "The Back Door" and a quick history lesson, "Elvis in the Army," are among the highlights.

This concert was originally aired live by BBC Radio 2.  The show begins with an announcer voice-over as the band begins with "Let it Rain". The original live broadcast ended with "Cocaine", as the band left the stage for the encore break. The encores ("Sunshine of Your Love" and "Got My Mojo Working") were never broadcast by the BBC.

This is a complete, pre-FM version of this show, with encores, "no optimod or additional compression". No remastering, no "tweaking", no editing, no B.S., in perfect digital quality. (The BBC distributed this show from the venue to their broadcast centre via an internal digital link, which is lossy.)

Thanks to the original source!
