RIP Tom Petty- Man, am I tired of doing this. Here I am again trying
to express a sense of loss, with words, which is hard enough to do
without the depressingly uncanny frequency of major losses we’ve
suffered this year- and it’s barely October. Tom Petty was a
great songwriter. If he’d written only a handful of the classic songs
we’ve all known and loved through the years this would still be the
case. But he defied history. He did what so few can do- he kept up the
pace for over 40 years and as great as
the songs from the early albums were he actually continued to get better
and better, composing a lot of his best works later in his career. And
he kept them coming. I remember commenting during a short tour we did
together with the Allman Brothers and the Heartbreakers that they had so
many hits they couldn’t fit them all into one show. And not just hits.
The kind of hits that "everybody" likes. Casual fans, rockers,
musicians, singer-songwriters, male and female- across the board.
Everybody loves Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. And for good reason. I
can remember in different stages of my life, (going all the way back to
1976 when I first heard them) no matter where my head was- if I was
going through a blues phase, or a jazz phase, or a folky phase, or a
funk phase- anytime I would hear a new Tom Petty song on the radio it
was like “damn, that’s a good song”. And like all great bands from the
60’s and 70’s the Heartbreakers had a sound. You knew it was them as
soon as you heard it. Evolving and adapting but never straying too far
from that sound, they somehow managed to navigate their way through 4
decades of an ever-changing music business- a feat unto itself.
But Tom Petty was also a true artist in the way that he fought for the
right to deliver his music uncompromised and his well known disputes
with the corporate side of the music industry helped pave the way for
other artists to do the same. I still remember his battle to keep the
record company from raising the price on Hard Promises because it would
be unfair to the fans. Reading about that as a 21 year-old kid inspired
me to be conscious of those kind of things. I also remember hearing a
story (assuming it’s true) of how he would find the person with the
worst seat in any venue they were performing in and have them moved down
front- another classy act. I barely knew Tom. We did a handful
of shows together. But I was a big fan before I met him and a bigger one
afterwards. I’m honored to have played together what little we did. The
world needs more Tom Petty’s. Unfortunately there was only one. And now
he’s gone. May we all “stand our ground” and “not back down”.

Concert recorded during the P-Funk Earth Tour, probably in November of 1976. The 13-minutes version of Dr. Funkenstein is a treasure with Bernie Worrell and Fred Wesley interacting, Maceo blowing some and the vocalists doing their thing.
*Thanks to the original source
What we have here is a pretty decent audience recording of Mott from their 1973 tour. Gone is Verden Allen and replaced by Morgan Fisher. As a famous man once said "enjoy or not" No covers.

Jeez you gotta feel for the Boss. After all the shit he's been through (and not only the hurricanes, ask him about his foot sometime) He's now gotta get his comp fixed. I have a theory though, I think ever since Agent Orange came to being and Bowie dying, it's some kind of payback for those who believe in truth, justice, and the American way. Anyway here's a band I'm gonna try and make you like. From Texas The Quaker City Nighthawks. I guess there stuff has been featured in Sons Of Anarchy. In my opinion if you like The Beat Farmers and music of that ilk I think you'll like this. No covers.

Ah yes... another holiday is upon us. In keeping with the tradition might I offer some suggestions on how to fully maximize your time off. First, may I suggest you take your dog/cat to your nearby Denny's and buy them breakfast, but make sure they leave the tip. Second while BBQ'ing today play the fun game of trying to swat the fly's into the flame (I'm horrible at it) Third pick any random FM Radio station and tell them how much you love the shit they play. Fourth for today only switch your political affiliation. Fifth paste cornbread to your nipples. and finally TURN THIS DOWNLOAD UP TO MAXIMUM VOLUME. This will help you enjoy this holiday to the full extent of the day. No covers.

*Original Post Notes* Greetings once again, oh ye faithful who enjoy the 'Stomp. I've
been egregiously absent from the proceedings here, letting my partner
Mr. Way carry the load for a blog which we very much want to stay alive.
So today I bring you a great recording from a show which I was party to
on my birthday in 1981. The Stones 1981 tour, the first tour to ever be
sponsored by a corporation (Jovan) which has now become de riguer, and
driven ticket prices to levels which make me want to vomit blood.
However, I digress... this show is worth the harvest and has exceptional
sound quality. I only stumbled across it recently and had no idea an
aural document even existed. The Uni-Dome is the sports arena for the
Panthers of the University of Northern Iowa, located in the Iowa city of
Cedar Falls. The ceiling of the dome is held up by a constant flow of
air pushed in through various types of machinery. Because of this, and
the temps put off by the 25,000 plus crowd, it actually rained inside
the venue while the Stones played. This was confirmed by Jagger's
comment, "I didn't know it rained indoors in Iowa..." which can be found
on this recording. Anyway, enough of me prattling on, get busy clicking
on the things that will allow you access to this wonderful concert.

Neil Young - Phoenix Festival Long Marston, Stratford-Upon-Avon, UK July 19, 1996 Liberated Bootleg from:
FM Source @320
**Original Notes** Blistering heat. Expensive lager. Drivers inching
their cars up dirt tracks toward men with walkie-talkies who will tell
them that they're at the wrong entrance. Ah, the festival experience! At
the Phoenix Festival, held near Stratford-upon-Avon last weekend, you
sometimes felt that it couldn't have got worse if Margherite Pracatan
had been wheeled on as a special guest. And then she was. She tickled
her keyboard and rolled her "r"s. She opened with "I Will Survive". You
didn't think you would.
The previous night, it had been up to
Neil Young and Crazy Horse to give us something to remember about the
Phoenix other than the smell of the toilets. And they managed it,
largely by doing what the world at large is strongly urged to do, and
giving the songs from their witless new album Broken Arrow a wide berth.
Friday
was singalongaNeil night, a greatest hits selection which proved that
familiarity need not be synonymous with predictability. Young tore at
the songs like he was ripping the head off a wildebeest with his bare
hands; his playing was savage and relentless, and you found his
absorption infectious (when he got caught up in "Like a Hurricane", he
had the blissfully distant look of a man who should be eating pureed
food with plastic cutlery in a day-room somewhere).
He had his
flashes of introspection, too, or in current parlance, his unplugged
moments, when he took a breather, took up an acoustic guitar for "The
Needle and the Damage Done", and took your breath away. You're still
inclined to question the validity of any guitar solo which lasts longer
than a trip to the beer tent and back. But Young lit up the sky, and the
weekend, with something curiously absent from most of the festival's
other acts: passion. And he didn't need to launch fireworks into the
Stratford sky to do it.
