Back Door - A Live Decade 1976-1985

A Dave Sez contribution rebooted...

Back Door - A Live Decade 1976-1985

Another one from the Dave Sez music archives. Back Door were one of the most atypical prog jazz/blues groups of the early 1970s, a trio with no guitar, where bass ace Colin Hodgkinson plays lead blues bass - think Hendrix! Hodgkinson also played alongside Alexis Korner from 1969 until the latter's death in 1984. Back Door's career spanned four albums from 1973 to 1976 with sporadic performances into the mid 1980s. Hodgkinson would go on to be the regular bassist for Spencer Davis as well as playing with Cozy Powell, Jan Hammer, Whitesnake, and German blues guitarist Frank Diez (in the Electric Blues Duo). Most recently, he played with the British Blues Quintet in 2007, reformed Back Door for a CD in 2008 and played with the Jon Lord Blues Project in 2011.

Track List:
1. 32-20 Blues
2. When You Got A Good Friend
3. Catcote Rag
4. Turning Point
5. Moon Mad Woman
6. Back Door
7. Askin' The Way
8. The Spoiler
9. Turnaround
10. Vienna Breakdown
11. Folksong
12. Blue Country Blues
13. Human Bed
14. Norman's Got The Blues
15. Lieutenant Loose

Ron Aspery: Alto and Soprano sax, Flute, Keyboards
Colin Hodgkinson: Bass, Vocals
Tony Hicks, Adrian Tilbrook: Drums

Soundboard, 192 kbps, 115 MB. Full covers and text included. Thanks to elasticrock for the original post.

Bonus:

Back Door - Live in London 1973

1. Folk Song 3:21
2. Roberta 2:56
3. Linin' Track 3:59
4. Forget me Daisy 2:34

6. His Old Boots 4:02

Soundboard @ 320 kbps, 50 MB. Full covers and text included. Thanks to elasticrock and Woody at floppybootstomp for the original posts. This is a sound upgrade over the previous FBS post.

These are the only two known Back Door bootlegs; recordings of Hodgkinson with Alexis Korner, Jan Hammer and Frank Diez are available - just ask in the comments.

Cleaning and Tracking by: Chrisedge
I was given the captured wav files to do a basic cleanup and trackout. The only issue with the tape was a cut and flip during “Hot House.” I removed the gaps but didn't try and cover it too much. I am on a big X kick for their 40th Anniversary this year and this is a lively show from 1983 with some songs that don't get played much, including a great version of “True Love (Part 2).”

Reformed Washington D.C. band The Dismemberment Plan play a live set on KEXP from Judson Memorial Church in NYC during CMJ 2013.
Recorded 10/18/2013.

http://www.dismembermentplan.com/

The Dismemberment Plan is a Washington D.C. based indie rock band formed on January 1, 1993. Also known as D-Plan or The Plan, the name comes from a stray phrase uttered by insurance salesman Ned Ryerson in the popular comedy Groundhog Day. The band members include Eric Axelson (bass), Jason Caddell (guitar), Joe Easley (drums) and Travis Morrison (vocals and guitar). Axelson, Caddell, Morrison and original drummer Steve Cummings formed the band in college, knowing each other from attending various Northern Virginia high schools (Axelson, Cummings, and Morrison attended Lake Braddock Secondary School together in Burke, Virginia). Cummings left the band after the recording of the Plan's debut album and was replaced by Easley, cementing the band's lineup. The Dismemberment Plan released four albums, before breaking up in 2003. They reunited in early 2011, touring the US and Japan and releasing a live album. A comeback album, Uncanney Valley, was released on October 15, 2013.

My favorite Dismemberment Plan record CHANGE.
Check Out "Superpowers".

"Superpowers"

I've seen the world's most beautiful women undress in ordinary solitude
I've fallen asleep in shift of distant satin
I've watched the rich risk it all for
Fifteen minutes in a Heathrow bathroom
I've shuddered as an unseen mouth slid down my spine every night
I have seized with the ice cold rage
Of a lover betrayed half a million miles away
I have cried so hard for hours and not known why, I never do
I've been knocked down flat by joy
That makes my face pulse like a sugar high
I've been cornered by the screams of a body as it freed itself of it's mind
I guess you could call it 'Superpowers'
But no one is going to save the world with what I've got
An indigo light from silvery towers
Surrounded by rocks and stones as far as the eye can see
I've been lost in a cold white space
As an arrogant dream storms in from another life
I have felt the snaps of lines that bind us all to this world
I have felt such unreal pain and not known what to do, it isn't mine
I have stayed awake for weeks and slept for days, not one dream
I guess you could call it 'Superpowers'
But no one is going to save the world with what I've got
An indigo light from silvery towers
Surrounded by rocks and stones as far as the eye can see
Under low gray skies
And a razored wind that tears at the walls
