Frank Zappa - Live Austin, Texas
aka-Howdy Austin!
Octomer 26, 1973

Austin 1973 [Kaktus Records 10K06R02, 1CD]

Live at Armadillo World Headquarters, Austin, TX; October 26, 1973. Very good to excellent soundboard; with a bit of hiss.

*Original Notes*

It’s just tragic that Frank Zappa died at the relatively young age of 52 in 1993. And it’s one of rock’s could-have-beens had Zappa lived on - who knows what types of music he would create. As it is, it’s already impossible to pigeonhole Zappa’s show - there’s a bit of everything; everything sort of gels and the only thing anyone can say is that the man’s a true national treasure.

The Real Frank Zappa Book has many memorable quotes and here’s one:

I want to know three things when I go on stage: i) that my equipment is working, ii) that the band members absolutely know the material, so I don’t have to worry about them, and iii) that the rhythm section can hear what I’m playing and that it has some “concept” of it so it can help build the improvisation.

And this is what Arthur Barrow, who was Zappa’s bassist in the late ’70s and early ’80s, wrote:

Rehearsals were grueling and wonderful. We rehearsed at least 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, for about 6 weeks or so before a tour. Rehearsals usually got started around mid-afternoon, with the Clonemeister leading for the first half of the day, then Frank would arrive and take over for the remainder of the day…

On the first day of rehearsals for the last tour I did, Frank brought in a list of about 200 songs that he wanted us to learn. I knew right away that it would be impossible for us to learn that many songs in the amount of time we had. I also knew from past experience that when Frank called for us to play a tune from the list and it sounded bad, he would often remove it from the list. If the tune in question happened to be one that the band liked and wanted to continue to work on, the band would be begging him to please give a little more time to work on it some more and get it right. I think he used it as a threat to try to motivate the band.

Rose Hill Drive - Live Glasgow Scotland 2008

Rose Hill Drive - Live King Tut's

Lineage: Aud->Edirol R09->Nero Wave Editor Sbd->JB3->Nero Wave Editor. Matrix created in Audacity (Aud: +3db SB+0db)
Taped by: Evangeline

Rose Hill Drive is a rock n roll band. People who say they like Rose Hill Drive often say they like old school rock n roll, but the may also say they like drugs, and Rose Hill Drive doesn't know anything about those drugs. Rose Hill Drive just wants to kick out the jams and be a responsible and integral part of the emerging global community. One time somebody asked Rose Hill Drive if they were for real, and Rose Hill Drive asked simply, "are you for real?".

Rose Hill Drive happens when Nate Barnes plays the drums, Daniel Sproul plays the lead guitar, Daniel's brother Jake plays the guitar and sings, and Jimmy Stofer plays the bass. Sometimes one of them will play the maracas, sometimes one of them will play the keyboards. And every so often, one of them won't play anything at all. Whoa. Heady. These details should be of little concern. The take home point is that Rose Hill Drive loves making rock n roll together and playing it for enthusiasts of electric music.

Rose Hill Drive wishes the Starz hit comedy Party Down would come out with a 3rd season, but that aside, they are elated about their 2011 release "Americana." Their collective opinion is that it is their best music to date and their best music to date to.

Rose Hill Drive doesn't like to name drop so they will refrain from telling you that they did open for The Who, Van Halen, Aerosmith, The Black Crowes, Wilco, Queens Of The Stone Age, and are curently on the road supporting Stone Temple Pilots. This is big time, and to remain down-to-earth, to keep their heads on straight, Rose Hill Drive will trade off giving each other lashings with a studded whip.

You may also find Rose Hill Drive cooking breakfast on a coleman grill in your local wal-mart parking lot. And if you do, feel free to stop and say hello, maybe share a brew and story or two about the good ol' American west. And kick 'em a couple bucks if you feel so obliged.

Hoodoo Gurus - Live
Lyon, France 1989

The legendary Hoodoo Gurus. By any measure, one of Australia's greatest, best loved, most enduring rock bands of all time.
2012 marks an extraordinary milestone for the Hoodoo Gurus; 30 years since the release of the band's debut single, "Leilani".

To celebrate, the Gurus have compiled all their biggest hits and fan favourites onto a brand new best-of set, aptly-titled GOLD WATCH: 20 GOLDEN GREATS.
"What's My Scene?", "I Want You Back", "Miss Freelove '69", "Like Wow - Wipeout!", "The Right Time", "Bittersweet", "Come Anytime", "My Girl", "1000 Miles Away", "Waking Up Tired" - these tracks represent the unmistakable sound of the irrepressible Hoodoo Gurus, but it's merely a sample from their canon of instantly identifiable songs that have helped provide a soundtrack to Australian life going all the way back to the 1980s.

Ginger Baker/No Material - Munich 1987

Rebooted...Again
Originally posted June 14, 2016 & August 6, 2022

Ginger Baker/No Material
Live Munich 1987
Theaterfabrik, Unterföhring,
Munich, Germany

March 25, 1987
Soundboard @320
Out of Print

No Material consisted of Ginger Baker (drums), Nicky Skopelitis and Sonny Sharrock (guitars), Peter Brötzmann (sax), and Jan Kazda (bass). The band existed for less than a week in 1987. In the liner notes for the 1989 release of Ginger Baker's No Material album, Steve Lake closes by saying "I'm glad that No Material came together to nail down their non-repertoire in March 1987 and glad that their efforts are now preserved for posterity to puzzle over. May the archivists now go and look for the Munich gig." Well, 20-plus years later, here is the Munich gig: the first show ever performed by this semi-legendary band. As expected, the performance is absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, the recording is not. The biggest issue is the sound. While it's generally clear, the sound is thin and the high end (especially any cymbal work) sounds terrible. It sounds as if the CD was mastered from a compressed MP3 file. Then there's the way it's programmed. The brief interview excerpts follow the first two tracks, totally derailing the momentum of the show. The Sharrock bit is nice, if a bit out of place, but the Skopelitis excerpt adds absolutely nothing. Time must have been a factor because "Piece 3" fades out and back in somewhat clumsily. "Piece 5" is basically solo Sharrock, riffing on his own "Blind Willie" before fading out just shy of the two-minute mark. It's a confusing way to end the album since there was clearly more music. Fans will want to hear this for sure, but they're likely to be somewhat disappointed. ~Sean Westergaard - Allmusic.com

Not as bad as reviewed but definitely for those with a taste for the 'avante garde".

Musigny23 notes:
In Sept '89 I was able to make DAT copies of about 20 items from KSAN
reels. In the early '90s I did some DAT trades and since then they
appear to have circulated far and wide. I've seen these items pop up
here a number of times and the uploader had gotten them in trade and
did not know the original lineage. I thought I would get busy and
upload them myself since I put these in circulation to begin with and
I have the original DATs that they all come from.
